Agar makanan yang diolah tidak kehilangan kandungan gizinya, ada beberapa hal yang mesti diperhatikan, antara lain :
1. Kukus sayuran dan buah untuk mendapatkan nilai nutrisi terbaik. Buah dan sayuran yang dikukus warnanya akan lebih menarik dan rasanya lebih manis dibandingkan yang direbus.
2. Buat lebih banyak pilihan buah utuh atau potong dalam penyajian dibandingkan dibuat jus, untuk mendapatkan kandungan serat yang lebih baik.
3. Variasikan pilihan buah dan sayuran yang anda sajikan. Tiap buah mengandung nutrisi yang berbeda-beda.
4. Sajikan lebih banyak makanan dari bahan-bahan segar untuk mengurangi asupan sodium. Kebanyakan sodium yang terdapat pada makanan berasal dari makanan kemasan atau makanan yang telah diproses.
5. Bila anda memilih menggunakan buah kaleng, pilih buah yang dikalengkan dalam 100 persen jus buah atau air, bukan sirop.
6. Beli sayuran kaleng dengan label "tanpa ditambahkan garam".
7. Simpan sayuran dan buah yang telah dipotong dalam lemari es untuk diginakan lagi.
